“It turns out that multitasking is a DESTROYER of delight.” - yes!
When I’m fully in the moment, wow, I can feel the 100% delight.
With ADHD, our minds are often whirling, so it’s a good reminder to start meditation to practice creating a bit of space so the delight can have a chance to flourish.
I find it indescribably challenging to just... be. To not be listening to an audiobook or podcast when I walk, or when I watch my kid's sports practice from the sidelines. To not have a notebook in my hand for making lists or trying to catch some of the elusive thoughts that blow through my mind. To not pull out the phone and check for that one email or chat or text.
Yeah, it's definitely a "muscle"! Sometimes I have to have a little mantra, like "Breathing in. I am breathing in. Breathing out. I am breathing out." Or I think "I am here right now." in a rhythm with my breath. Maybe you should start at 5 minutes and work up. ;)
I recently got a puppy who thinks that everything in the world must be explored by mouth. So multitasking has become a new normal thing for me. Laundry and "Get that out of your mouth" are going hand in hand. And I've become conscious that a teething creature needs some redirectional toys before my hands become targets for teeth relief.
Delight then has been when instead of going for bites she gives puppy kisses. Sometimes you don't need to go out to find delight, sometimes it comes to you.
Awww, EXACTLY! One of the elements of delight is surprise, for sure! That least expected jolt of joy. Enjoy your puppy, and YES caretaking (be it tiny human or otherwise) involves a LOT of multitasking!
I love this!!! I’ve been practicing this lately as well. On my way home from work (I’m a therapist so I’m listening/talking all day) I started listening to only music I know and can sing along to to stimulate my vagus nerve and help my nervous system relax. Doesn’t mean I never listen to audiobooks or podcasts or Voxer, but I don’t do it on my way home.
Yeah, I love that! I've also been using music a bit more when Classical, recently, which I love but rarely make time for. I think it's the hits of delight I love--what are the flutes doing now? oh, I wasn't expecting it to go there! wow, what a crescendo! etc. 😃

Yes, whirling is SUCH a great word for it. Slowing down the whirl, or even just recognizing we're in it, is a great start!

Challenge accepted.
